Chapter 10 by Yanbin Lu reports the results of a study which investigated the relationship between WM and L2 written performance. Contrary to expectations, no significant relationship between WM capacity (as measured by the operation span task) and L2 writing performance was found, despite a slight relationship between L2 WM capacity and L2 productive vocabulary knowledge. Subsequent stepwise regression identified productive vocabulary as the only significant predictor of L2 writing performance (but not WM), regardless of participants’ L2 proficiency level.
